What is Kromas Alt?

We are a boutique color grading studio based in Manila, Philippines.

Trivia: Kromas is derived from the Greek word, chróma, meaning color. Alt is the “Alt” key from your keyboard.

What is Color Correction?

During filming, there are many variables at work that can affect how the overall image looks. For example, different cameras being used (with mixed in-camera settings), time of the day, varying light sources, etc.

In the editing room, Color-correction is simply done to “correct” the image by fixing the white balance and adjusting the exposures to arrive on a more cohesive picture. The video will then look realistic and closer to “true-to-life” colors.

What is Color Grading?

Color grading is a step in the post-production process where a Colorist adjusts the lighting, colors, and elements of an image to express emotions or to strengthen brand identity.

Do I need both Color Correction and Color Grading?

It depends on how you visualize your project.

Color Correction is the basic method of balancing your image while Color Grading is where the creative direction and details are applied. We recommend doing both because the two steps complete the whole process of coloring.

Can your Company shoot/edit videos?

As much as we would like to, Kromas Alt solely specializes on color grading. BUT, we can refer you to Production Houses and Editors we closely work with! Let us know if you want to meet them.

What picture profile should I use during the shoot?

The most ideal video files we can color are shot in a LOG profile (flat picture profile) We can still color a REC 709 profile (standard picture profile) but, not a lot of range will be available.

In simpler terms, it’s easier for a painter to add colors to a blank canvas (LOG) versus painting an already colored canvas (REC 709).

Any other tips before I shoot?

Color Grading is only a part of the filmmaking process! The final picture counts on all aspects (camera, lighting, set design) to be executed well.

What kind of files do you need?

We accept most video formats (mov, prores, mp4, dnxd, avi, mxf, etc.) and processed image formats (tiff, braw, png, psd, etc.).

You can do either of the following:

  • Send a high quality export of your edited video.

  • Send EDL/XML files together with raw footage.

How long will coloring take?

It depends on the total running time of your material, the number of storyboards, and how complex the given pegs are. Get an estimate from us today!

Can you also color photos?

What’s with the Octopus?

Fun Facts: Octopuses are highly intelligent creatures known for having 8 limbs, but did you know that they have 3 hearts and 9 brains? The cephalopod can change colors using cells called chromatosphores and their soft bodies allow them to have shape-shifting abilities. To top it off, the color of their blood is blue.

Like the Octopus, our Company takes pride in creating solutions, celebrating colors, all while having multiple passions and hearts.
